A weekend in farmhouse in Umbria: Castiglione del Lago and Principe del Trasimeno
We live near the sea, but we love going to the sea out of season when it is little crowded and not too hot. For a weekend of true relaxation, we decided to spend a weekend in Castiglione del Lago, on Lake Trasimeno, in Umbria. We wanted to relax, but also freedom: not having to respect times, especially those of breakfast served in the morning, it was one of the basic requirements of the whole family.
“I write to you from an enchanting place. Our house is in front of the Trasimeno Lake, all surrounded by thick hills and on the lake three green little dream islands, lying down abandoned as in a state of ectasy” (Vittoria Aganoor)
Castiglione del Lago is one of “the most beautiful villages of Italy” and indeed its historic centre is really very characteristic. It’s along the main Street (via Vittorio Emanuele) that from Piazza Dante Alighieri through Porta Senese (stop here to admire the panorama from the top, where you can see even Montepulciano) arrives to Piazza Antonio Gramsci. In Piazza Gramsci, in addition to the Belvedere on the placid Lake Trasimeno, stand Palazzo della Corgna and Rocca del Leone, both to visit: children will love them especially if you tell stories of knights and princesses!
From the point of view of activities to do, Castiglione del Lago is really rich: swimming, many golf courses in the surrounding area, horse riding, walking and cycling, motocross, sailing.
A weekend in farmhouse: Castiglione del Lago and Principe del Trasimeno
We chose to spend the weekend in a farmhouse: Principe del Trasimeno welcomed us with all its warmth. A real home away from home. A place really immersed in the green and an oasis of peace fully equipped to guarantee really a lot of freedom to its guests.
The structure is typical of this area of Italy: an ancient rural building in stone, with a court architecture and the typical external staircase against to the main artifact. All the buildings were renovated in 2007. This is a place that passes on a family tradition since the farmhouse belonged to Arturo, the grandfather of Beatrice, who now runs the farmhouse. Castiglione del Lago is only 4 km away and within a short distance there are many important artistic and cultural centres of Tuscany and Umbria: Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, Gubbio, Siena, Florence, Cortona and many other villages rich in history, culture and art.
The structure has 13 apartments, with different sizes for every need, with access to the garden, laundry area and barbecue in the pinewood, air conditioning and heating, satellite TV and WiFi. The apartments allow a really relaxing holiday: do not think of having to cook, because in the surroundings there are supermarkets (of all kinds, from Lidl to Coop), small local activities of butchers, fruit and vegetables, bakery and pizzerias and restaurants… You can get up whenever you want, enjoy the beautiful swimming pool, walk in the park (also equipped with playground for children), relax with a good book or crossword puzzle, organize a tennis or football match, make a barbecue. If you love biking, there is a bike rental not far from the farmhouse and a cycle path that leaves near the lake.
Our apartment, Anguilla, which you have seen live in Instagram Stories, is about 50 sqm on the ground floor, with a large kitchen in the living room and fireplace. The kitchen is well-equipped with electric oven, dishwasher, refrigerator and freezer. It can accommodate two adults with two children. The bedroom, large and furnished in typical style, has direct access to the swimming pool.
For dinner, we asked for advice to Beatrice, who directed us to the restaurant pizzeria La Cantina: ask for a table in the terrace (remember to book!) and you will enjoy a beautiful sunset on the lake.
